What Happens During a Professional AC Tune-Up (And Why You Need One)

Your AC works harder in Arizona than almost anywhere else in the country. When it’s 115° outside, your system is running for hours on end just to keep your home livable—and that kind of workload is brutal on equipment. A professional AC tune-up makes sure your system can handle the job, and that you’re not paying more than you need to in the process.

A real tune-up isn’t a quick once-over. At Hansen Family Plumbing and Air, our technicians work through a detailed maintenance checklist that covers your entire system—indoor, outdoor, and everything in between. Here’s exactly what that looks like.

Indoor Section

This is where comfort starts. Most efficiency and airflow problems show up here first.

  • Temperature split. We measure the supply and return temperature split. A healthy system runs at 17–20°F. Below 17° usually means your system needs service; above 20° often points to low airflow.
  • Filter. We check the filter, note the size and type, and replace it if needed.
  • Evaporator coil and metering device. We monitor the metering device (TXV, piston, or EEV) and inspect the evaporator coil.
  • Blower motor. We verify proper blower operation, check amp draw, and look for excessive play in the shaft.
  • Capacitor. We test the indoor capacitor to confirm it’s within the manufacturer’s tolerance.
  • Electrical wiring. We inspect for loose connections, corroded terminals, and burnt wires.
  • Duct work condition. We assess the condition of your ductwork and note any concerns.
  • Attic insulation. Sufficient attic insulation reduces utility bills and improves comfort. The Department of Energy recommends a minimum of R-30, and we’ll let you know if you’re falling short.
  • Plenum sealed. We verify the plenum is properly sealed so you’re not leaking conditioned air into the attic.

Condensate Disposal

Arizona homes rely on the condensate system to handle moisture pulled from the air. When it clogs, you get water damage…fast!

  • Condensate piping. We verify the piping is correct and that a P-trap and/or vent is installed.
  • Drain operation. We monitor drain operation to make sure water is moving freely.
  • Condensate treatment. We treat the condensate system as needed: flushing the drain line with nitrogen/CO₂, adding pan treatment tabs, and installing a pan treatment pad.
  • Secondary drain system. We inspect the secondary drain system and safety controls so you have backup protection if the primary line ever clogs.

Outdoor Section

Your outdoor unit takes the worst of the Arizona sun, dust, and monsoon debris. This is where preventive maintenance pays off the most.

  • Condenser coil. We check the condition of the coil and clean as required. A dirty condenser coil alone can significantly drop your system’s efficiency.
  • Condenser fan motor. We monitor the motor for correct amp draw, rotation, vibration, and rust rings.
  • Electrical wiring. We inspect outdoor wiring for loose spots, burnt connections, or anything else that needs attention.
  • Capacitors. We verify capacitors are within tolerance. A failing capacitor is one of the most common causes of summer breakdowns.
  • Contactor. We inspect the contactor for pitting and burnt spots.
  • Compressor. We monitor starting capabilities and amp draw. For units over 5 years old, we recommend a compressor saver.
  • Refrigerant charge. If the temperature split isn’t within the 17–20° tolerance, we record suction PSIG, head PSIG, superheat, and subcool to diagnose the issue properly.

Why This Level of Detail Matters in Arizona

Your System Works Harder Here

An AC in Greater Phoenix runs far more hours per year than one in a milder climate. That extra wear and tear adds up fast. Regular tune-ups keep everything running efficiently so your system doesn’t have to push itself harder than necessary just to keep up.

It Saves You Money

A well-maintained AC simply uses less energy. When coils are clean, refrigerant levels are correct, and airflow is unobstructed, your system cools your home more efficiently, and that shows up directly on your electric bill. During peak summer months when Arizona energy bills can skyrocket, even a small improvement in efficiency makes a real difference.

It Prevents Expensive Breakdowns

Most emergency AC repairs we see could have been prevented with routine maintenance. A thorough tune-up catches worn capacitors, weak contactors, refrigerant issues, and electrical problems early—when they’re cheap and easy to fix. Waiting until your system fails means emergency service calls, higher repair costs, and a very uncomfortable house full of hot, frustrated people.

It Extends Your System’s Life

AC units in Arizona often have a shorter lifespan than the national average due to the extreme heat. Regular maintenance helps you get the most years possible out of your investment. Skipping tune-ups is one of the fastest ways to shorten your system’s life and put yourself in line for an early replacement.

When to Schedule Your Tune-Up

The best time for a tune-up is in the spring, ideally March or April, before the summer heat kicks in. That gives you time to address any issues before you’re relying on your AC every single day.

If your system runs year-round, scheduling a second visit in the fall to check your heating system is a smart move too. Same logic: catch problems before you really need the system to perform.

Keep Your AC Ready for Whatever Arizona Throws at It

A tune-up is the simplest, most affordable thing you can do to protect your comfort and your wallet. It takes about an hour, costs a fraction of what a major repair would, and gives you peace of mind heading into another brutal Arizona summer.

Ready to get your system checked? Hansen Family Plumbing and Air makes it easy. Our technicians know Arizona HVAC systems inside and out, and we follow a detailed maintenance checklist on every visit—so nothing gets overlooked.
