An oversized unit cools the air quickly, shuts off, and never runs long enough to pull humidity out or distribute air evenly — so it short-cycles, wears out its compressor early, and leaves you with hot rooms. If SRP is your utility, the Cool Cash rebate pays per ton of cooling capacity on systems rated SEER2 15.2 or higher: $75 per ton for single-stage compressors, $150 for multi-stage, and $225 for variable-capacity or inverter-driven systems. On a four-ton system that is a $300 to $900 difference, which can offset a meaningful part of the step up to better equipment. Rebates must be submitted within six months of installation, and we handle that paperwork for our customers.

One thing to be aware of: the federal 25C tax credit for high-efficiency HVAC expired for systems placed in service after December 31, 2025. A number of sites still say otherwise. It does not apply to a 2026 installation.
