Common Garbage Disposal Issues and When to Call a Professional

Garbage disposals are a convenient kitchen appliance that makes cleanup a breeze. However, they can run into problems that need attention. In this post, we’ll cover some common garbage disposal issues, what to do if you break glass in your sink, and why having an Allen Wrench on hand is crucial. Plus, we’ll help you determine when it’s time to call in a professional.

Common Garbage Disposal Issues

Jamming

Symptoms: The disposal makes a humming noise but doesn’t grind.
Solution: This usually happens due to food or objects getting stuck in the blades. First, make sure the disposal is turned off and unplugged. Use a flashlight to look inside and try to remove any visible obstructions with pliers or tongs. Most garbage disposals come with a hex hole at the bottom of the unit. This is where an Allen wrench (usually 1/4 inch) comes into play. Insert the Allen wrench into the hex hole at the bottom of the disposal. Turn the wrench back and forth. This action manually rotates the blades and helps dislodge any stuck objects. You should feel the blades begin to move more freely as the obstruction is cleared. Once the jam is cleared, locate the reset button on the bottom of the disposal. Press it to reset the unit to test functionality.

Clogs

Symptoms: Water drains slowly or not at all.
Solution: Avoid using chemical drain cleaners. Instead, try plunging the sink or using a mixture of baking soda and vinegar followed by hot water to clear the clog. If the clog persists, it may be time to call a professional.

Leaks

Symptoms: Water pooling under the sink.
Solution: Check the connections and seals. If they are loose or worn out, tighten or replace them. Persistent leaks may indicate a more serious issue requiring professional repair or replacement.

What to Do if You Break Glass in Your Sink

Breaking glass in your sink can be nerve-wracking, especially if some shards end up in the disposal. Here’s what to do:

Turn Off and Unplug: Ensure the disposal is turned off and unplugged to prevent any accidents.
Remove Large Pieces: Carefully remove large glass pieces from the sink and disposal using pliers or tongs. Avoid using your hands to prevent cuts.
Vacuum Small Shards: Use a wet-dry vacuum to suck out smaller shards from the disposal.
Flush with Water: Run cold water to wash away any remaining fragments. Never turn on the disposal until you are certain all glass is removed.

Why Having an Allen Wrench on Hand is Important

An Allen wrench is a handy tool that can help you quickly resolve many garbage disposal jams. By inserting it into the bottom of the disposal unit, you can manually turn the blades to free any stuck objects. This simple tool can save you from a lot of frustration and the need for professional help in many cases.

When to Call a Professional

While many minor issues can be resolved with DIY methods, there are times when calling a professional is the best course of action:
Persistent Jams or Clogs: If you frequently experience jams or clogs, it could indicate a deeper issue.
Strange Noises: Unusual grinding or metallic noises can signal a serious problem.
Water Leaks: Continuous leaks could mean that seals or the disposal itself is damaged.
Electrical Issues: If the disposal won’t turn on or trips the circuit breaker, it’s best to have a professional inspect the wiring.
